Targeting a sustainable development towards a Toxic-Free Environment From TRL3 to TRL5

Safe and sustainable by design (SSbD), according to OECD, can be described as an approach that focuses on providing a function or service, while minimising environmental footprints and overcoming chemical properties that may be harmful to human health or the environment.

PROPLANET will cover the whole value chain, creating circularity by considering different stages: i) sourcing, conversion and pre-treatment, ii) disruptive and enhanced production at an industrialisation system up to TRL5, iii) end-user testing, and iv) next-use activities at all stages of manufacture, including end-of-life (recycle, and reuse).

The project will follow the guidelines on how to structure the criteria for sustainable-by-design and safety presented by the European Commission. Moreover, PROPLANET will maximise the alignment with the projects funded under the same topic.

The objective is to contribute to the development of criteria and guiding principles for safety and sustainability-by design, integrating circularity and functionality of advanced materials. In addition, in PROPLANET, continuous internal reviews will be carried out to ensure being as up-to-date and as in line as possible with international work (e.g., OECD, ECHA, UNEP).
