Replication Tool
Discover PFAS-Free Coating Solutions with the PROPLANET Replication Tool
The PROPLANET Replication Tool is an open-source web application developed during the PROPLANET project. It has been designed to help you explore PFAS-free coating technologies developed through our research. Whether you’re a manufacturer looking to transition away from problematic chemicals, a researcher investigating sustainable alternatives, or a policymaker assessing available options, this tool provides the information you need to make informed decisions.
PFAS—per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances—have been widely used in coatings for decades due to their so far unmatched water and oil repellent properties. However, their persistence in the environment and potential health risks have made them a growing concern. The PROPLANET project has developed innovative coating formulations for glass, metal, and textiles that deliver comparable performance without relying on these “forever chemicals.”
Our tool makes this knowledge accessible. You can screen different coating formulation components, compare their potential properties and coatings’ performance characteristics, and explore their environmental fate as well as possible safety concerns (see information provided with the tool for more information).
The interface is designed to be intuitive, requiring no specialised software or technical background to navigate. Interactive features, either based on data obtained from first-principle simulations or environmental fate models, allow you to run simulations. A multi-objective optimisation model linked with safety reference values provides you with a set of compromise solutions for optimal formulations. You’ll also find links to the complete source code on GitHub:
- PROPLANET Replication Tool (Idener): This repository contains the main implementation of the web tool (Frontend in Blazorise and Backend in .NET 8), as well as the data orchestration and integration logic. It serves as the primary entry point for application deployment.
- SimpleBox4Planet Module (NovaMechanics): A dedicated repository, managed by NovaMechanics, containing the source code and algorithms of the environmental fate model (an adaptation of the SimpleBox multimedia model).
- Lung Deposition Module (NovaMechanics): A specific repository hosting the computational logic for lung deposition models and human exposure assessment, managed and supplied by NovaMechanics.
- Optimisation Procedure Module (University of Málaga), enabling technical users to adapt and build upon our work, obtaining optimal solutions based on the data provided.
NILU defined the approach for the safety indicator and the relative traffic-light system integrated in the database (based on risk characterisation ratio – RCR), and retrieved the safety reference values (from the ECHA CHEM database) used to assess compound safety in the PROPLANET Replication Tools.
RINA-CSM worked on describing the materials on a molecular scale using first-principle simulations and developed a model to assess the potential performance of the coatings with the help of experimental data provided by TECNALIA.
