On January 21st, 2025, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) updated its Candidate List of Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC), adding five more chemicals to the list. With this latest update, the total number of substances on the list has reached 247. These chemicals are considered hazardous because they pose serious risks to human health and the environment.
The addition of these five chemicals highlights the continued importance of tackling substances that could have long-lasting negative effects. Whether it’s through causing cancer, harming reproduction, or lingering in the environment, these substances need careful management and attention.
For companies, this means even more responsibility. With these chemicals now officially on the list, businesses are required to take extra steps to manage the risks they present. That includes making sure customers and consumers are informed about how to use these chemicals safely. Clear guidance on potential risks and safety measures is essential to help prevent harmful exposure.
This move is part of the EU’s ongoing commitment to safeguarding health and the environment, and it encourages businesses to seek safer alternatives where possible. It’s a step forward in making sure that chemicals are used in a way that protects both people and the planet.
