France Takes a Major Step: Bans PFAS in Everyday Products

In a significant move toward protecting public health and the environment, France has officially banned PFAS—known as “forever chemicals”—in a range of everyday products, including cosmetics, clothing, and cookware. These substances, valued for their non-stick and water-resistant properties, are commonly found in items like mascaras, outdoor jackets, and non-stick pans, but they are also known for being extremely persistent and toxic.

The new legislation goes further than product restrictions. It also introduces mandatory testing of drinking water for PFAS contamination, reflecting growing concerns about the long-term environmental and health risks these substances pose. Meanwhile, the European Union is currently considering a broader, EU-wide ban as pressure mounts to regulate harmful chemicals more strictly across member states.

At PROPLANET, we strongly support and align with these actions. Our project is working toward the replacement of PFAS in commonly used coatings—particularly those used in textiles, food packaging, and glass—with safe and sustainable alternatives. Through the Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) framework, PROPLANET aims to develop innovative materials that maintain functionality while eliminating toxic and persistent chemicals from the value chain.
